Every so often, out of nowhere comes a film like Nobody. Much like when John Wick, Ong Bak, The Matrix and The Raid first hit cinemas, the action leaps out of the screen and into your seats giving you firm uppercut to the cerebral cortex.
Hutch Mansell fails to defend himself or his family when two thieves break into his suburban home one night. The aftermath of the incident soon strikes a match to his long-simmering rage. In a barrage of fists, gunfire and squealing tires, Hutch must now save his wife and son from a dangerous adversary — and ensure that he will never be underestimated again.
There’s a moment in the film where Bob Odenkirks Hutch is sitting in his car with his fingers crossed after goading the films main bad guy (Aleksey Serebryakov’s Yulian) into a showdown that you find yourself doing the same, much is the fun of the ultra violence that you have witnessed to this point. When he accepts, you just feel your chest puff up with anticipation of the carnage that is about to follow. And follow it does big time. Nobody is 2021’s perfect action movie.
Odenkirk plays the unassuming husband Hutch to perfection, as his ‘dark past’ starts to seep out, with all the chaos and violence that accompanies it. It’s a slow burn to as it doesn’t just happen, he takes his fair share of knocks as he approaches the final showdown and his talents reach their peak.
There’s so much to love here and vary little not to that Nobody manages to leave you wanting more, but not outstaying it’s welcome. Nobody has drawn comparisons to John Wick, which is unsurprising as they share the same writer (Derek Kolstad). But this is a far different beast to Wick but as dangerous at every turn.
2021 doesn’t care if your ready for Christopher Lloyd as a breakout action star (Yes Doc Brown eviscerates a whole bunch of bad guys) but here we are. Nobody is huge fun, incredibly violent, but is totally unmissable. Home made Lasagne will never taste the same again.
